Soy candles are a favourite of the environmentally conscious consumers. They are made from American-grown soybeans, are biodegradable, a renewable resource, and from a global point it supports the American economy instead of foreign oil conglomerates. The ingredient found in most candles is petroleum-based paraffin, therefore will burn a lot quicker than soy candles. Soy candles last 50 per cent longer and they burn slower and cooler helping to better distribute fragrance. Other benefits of the soy candles is that they are non-toxic, less likely to trigger allergies, easily cleaned up with soap and water and will produce very little soot. These factors make them more child and animal friendly than the traditional candles. However, no matter what candles you burn please remember that you are playing with fire. The National Fire Protection Association offers a candle safety sheet to help you stay safe. When using traditional or soy candles it is a very important issue to remember.
Made from soy wax, Soy Candles are a hydrogenated soybean oil. Soy wax is often mixed with fragrances to produce scented soy candles. These candles last 50 per cent longer than paraffin candles. Soy candle spills are easy to clean compared to paraffin wax which is difficult to remove from furniture or textiles. Soy candles produce less soot. Soy candles produce about 90 per cent less soot than paraffin candles. Soot should be avoided as it is not good for your health and can eventually coat your furniture and walls. Scented soy candles distribute more flavour by incorporation of soybean oil which lowers the melting point of the candle which then has a cooler burning point and faster scent dispersion. Paraffin wax candles versus Soy candles the findings are as follows; paraffin wax is derived from petroleum where soy wax is vegetable based; paraffin wax emits harmful vapours where soy wax is 100 per cent non-toxic and totally natural; paraffin wax emits black soot where soy wax burns cleaner and cooler; paraffin wax is difficult to remove where soy wax is easily cleaned; paraffin wax may produce carcinogens where soy wax lasts 50 per cent longer; paraffin wax may not burn completely where soy wax does; paraffin must be blended with chemicals to release fragrances where soy wax releases the fragrances naturally; and lastly but most importantly paraffin wax supports the oil industry where soy wax supports the farmer. Therefore, the healthy way to illuminate your life is by use of soy candles.
