Aloe Vera Plant applied externally has the ability to reach the deepest body tissues and can penetrate some seven layers. It has six antiseptic agents. As a general tonic, it can be taken regularly for stamina and well being.
Aloe Vera Plant also known as medicinal aloe, medicine plant or burn plant. The name comes from the Arabic “Alloeh”, meaning bitter because of the bitter yellow liquid that is found between the gel and the leaf skin. It is a succulent, clump forming perennial that reaches 2 – 3 foot (60 – 90 cm), it grows straight from the soil as a rosette of thick, fleshy, spear like, spiny toothed grey green leaves. It has a tall annual flower that has a head that bears a yellow orange flower on 3 ft (90 cm) spikes. Simply slice open the leaf and apply the clear, pale green gel for pain relief, and antisepsis.
A precaution with this plant is not to use internally during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding or if you are experiencing diarrhoea, loose stools or have any abdominal pain. It is easily grown; it needs a dry, well drained area as it can die quickly in wet soil. It cannot tolerate a heavy frost and although it can survive long hot summers it cannot take the severe heat from the tropics, unless it is grown in a semi-shaded area. It can start to look a little sad and thin but it will become plump and juicy once it rains. Once the plant matures it forms little suckers around the base of the Aloe Vera Plant which can be gently pulled off and planted into pots or your garden, you can also propagate from the stem cuttings. When required cut the leaves from two to three year old plants. During the colder months this plant becomes dormant and utilizes very little moisture therefore not requiring much watering. Allow the soil to become completely dry before adding a cup or two of water. In the hotter months make sure the soil is completely soaked and allow the soil to completely dry before re-watering. This plant has a shallow spreading root system which does not require a deep pot for planting. Make sure you choose a wide pot plant with a drainage hole, and ensure fertilization occurs annually in the spring. The benefits of the aloe Vera plant are tremendous.
